Travel Vaccinations and advice

Castle Mead Medical Centre only provides routine NHS travel vaccinations. We do not provide any Private Travel Vaccination (Those vaccines chargeable on the NHS).

If you require routine travel vaccinations, please contact the surgery with your destination details for further information on how to book an appointment in one of our Travel Clinics.

Free travel vaccinations

Travel vaccinations are available to patients with the following vaccinations being provided free of charge:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus and polio (combined booster)
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis A (including when combined with typhoid or hepatitis B)
  • Cholera
  • (MMR) Measles, Mumps and Rubella

The reason these vaccines are provided free of charge is that they protect against those diseases that are thought to represent a significant risk to public health if they were to be brought into the UK.

Private travel vaccinations

The following vaccinations are NOT available at the surgery:

  • Hepatitis B (when not combined with hepatitis A)
  • Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis
  • Meningitis vaccines
  • Rabies
  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Yellow fever

Castle Mead Medical Centre Travel Vaccination Protocol

  1. Patient calls the surgery to enquire about travel advice and what vaccinations they need.
  2. Reception will obtain date of travel. Due to timescale and appointment availability, the process should be started at least 10 weeks prior to travel. Vaccinations will need to be given at least 2 weeks before travel for them to be effective.
  3. The vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine.
  4. Reception will book patient an appointment in an available travel only clinic.
  5. They will also make patient aware that only Free NHS vaccines are provided at the surgery and if Private vaccines are required, they will have to attend a private travel clinic for these prior to booking at the surgery.
  6. If a patient declines one of the available travel only clinic appointments Reception will direct the patient to a private travel clinic.
  7. Once the travel clinic appointment is confirmed a link to the government travel website will be sent to the patient via AccuRx if the patient has a mobile number.

Which travel vaccines do I need?

You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended for the areas you'll be visiting on these websites:

Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.
